Mission & Strategy
The Lisbon Theatre and Film School (ESTC) was born in 1983 and has its origins in the National Conservatory created by Almeida Garrett in 1836.
In early January 1973, as the implementation of the reform made in the National Conservatory, which led to the inclusion of new artistic practices in the formal education system, Film won the right to become an official area of study.
Back to its foundation, under the name Escola Piloto para a Formação de Profissionais de Cinema, it is clear its characteristic mark which, at the same time, sets the goal of such project: to teach, in a highly artistic environment, a school that aims to provide training on a professional level.
Since 1985, the ESTC is integrated in the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon and precedes its objectives on Theatre and Cinema studies, preparing students with high level of professional qualification, research activities, experience and artistic production and projects directed community projects.
The ESTC has 2 departments: Theatre and Cinema.
In the Cinema Department there is a licence in Cinema in the following branches: Cinematography, Sound, Editing, Production, Direction and Screenwriting, and a Master in Cinema Project Development.
All the programmes include practical training and/or, internal or external, final staging project, as well as film production. This structure permits a strong relation with the professional venues and activities outside the school.
