Future Narratives II, research week, 25-29.01.2021, RITCS, Belgium

RITCS has organized for the second time a research week titled Future Narratives, from the 25th until the 29th of January, 2021. Artistic researchers—seniors and PhD students—will present their work, trajectory, their artistic and theoretic research results. They will invite kindred spirits, interlocutors, artists, and intellectuals who challenge them – people who have something to say and to show. They will present in the form that suits their story best: workshops, lectures, panel discussions, webinars, performances, film screenings, and more.

Technology is not new, and certainly the technology of the theatre has a long, impressive history. Telling stories, creating illusions: theatre technology has always played an important role in this. In the international research and teaching project A Canon of Theatre Technical History, nine European institutions of higher art education are working together to make students and audiences aware of the richness of that history.

Within this larger whole, Chris Van Goethem (RITCS) and Anders Larsson (UniArts, Stockholm) have made a presentation as part of the PWO (practice-based scientific research) project fading lights in which the history of theatre lighting is central: from candle to LED. Historical lighting techniques can also shed a figurative light on artistic developments in the theatre.

What happens when one switches from one light source to another, from gas light to incandescent lamp (or vice versa), from 'warm' light to LED. How does this transition influence the artistic process, the acting, the scenography, the professions? And how does this transition take place? And what can we learn from this for future technology changes?

Chris and Anders tell this exciting story, using images and a scale model that conjures up the many transformations.
