Three (3) Faculty Positions in Digital Filmmaking: Cinematography, Producing and Documentary

NTU Singapore invites qualified academics to apply for three (3) tenure-track faculty positions as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Full Professor in Digital Filmmaking (Cinematography, Producing and Documentary). Applicants with expertise in analogue or digital filmmaking are encouraged to apply.

Applicants in the specialty of Cinematography with expertise in one or more of the following are encouraged to apply for this appointment at ADM:

  1. Traditional, contemporary and emergent analogue and digital camera technologies
  2. Visual storytelling
  3. Camera approaches to genres such as documentary, drama, fiction, experimental film, and visual effects
  4. Have a distinct and perennial experience as a professional cinematographer which will enable him or her to teach the students hands-on in aesthetics and practical skills of cinematography including lighting, dollying, use of cranes, drones, etc.
  5. Related visual arts (ie painting, photography, animation)

 

Applicants in the specialty of Producing with expertise in one or more of the following are encouraged to apply for this appointment at ADM:

  1. Narrative filmmaking (fiction or non-fiction)
  2. Experimental filmmaking
  3. Film Editing and/or Post-Production
  4. Film Production management
  5. Visual Storytelling
  6. Related experience and knowledge (ie. literature, experimental film, visual music, visual effects, transmedia, interactive and social media, film history and critical studies)  

 

Applicants in the specialty of Documentary with expertise in one or more of the following are encouraged to apply for this joint appointment between ADM and WKWSCI:

  1. Ethnography and social documentary
  2. Scientific documentary
  3. Journalism and writing for film
  4. Data visualization and new technologies
  5. Emerging areas in documentary including social media
  6. Related arts (ie literature, painting, photography, animation, installation, net-art)

 

The Schools:

ADM is the first comprehensive art, design and media school in Singapore. It offers a studio-based professional education in a comprehensive university setting, providing students the knowledge and skills needed to develop and produce ground-breaking works of applied art and related scholarly activity. Currently, ADM offers a four-year BFA program in two distinct areas; Design Art and Media Art. Design Art includes product design, visual communication and interaction, while Media Art embraces a combination of filmmaking, photography and animation. With a strong Foundation Programme, the School also offers opportunities for focused studies in Art History, Cultural Heritage, Curation and Museum Studies. ADM has a graduate programme offering both Masters and Doctoral degrees.

The Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI), a global leader in communication and information research and education, is currently ranked 15th in the world in QS Subject Rankings.  WKWSCI integrates traditional strengths in the areas of journalism, broadcast & cinema studies, advertising & public relations, and documentary filmmaking with strong programmes of research in emerging areas such as virtual reality, serious games, mobile communication, and neuro-media studies.  WKWSCI offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Filmmaking at NTU actively explores and integrates established narrative forms and new technologies for storytelling and experimentation. It focuses on independent filmmaking in the global context with emphasis on Southeast Asia and fosters individual authorship while contributing to the growth of the film industry in Singapore, Southeast Asia and Asia. The programme embraces a strongly multicultural approach, working with emerging forms of digital ethnography, experimental documentary, sound design, and innovations in transmedia.

Applicants should possess a strong background in professional filmmaking and also university-level teaching experience, including mentoring of final student practical projects and post-graduate theses. A strong national and international reputation in the field, including a significant exhibition or publishing record, is a priority. A terminal, MFA or PhD degree is a requirement. In lieu of an advanced degree, the applicant must possess significant exhibition, performance, screening or related professional experience in their area of expertise commensurate with appointment at the senior level.

The successful applicant will contribute to the development of undergraduate and graduate curricula as well as to research within the arts, design, media and communication disciplines, and is expected to maintain an active research/creative production profile, as well as a commitment to teaching and service. Duties will include: undergraduate and graduate teaching/supervision, mentoring of BFA Final Year Projects, and facilitating interdisciplinary research and collaboration across the Schools and Colleges of NTU. An open, collaborative approach and willingness to work across areas and departments of the school and university is a priority. This position will also involve administrative activities and committee participation.
