Mission & Strategy
The Faculty of Arts, as it is known today, was structured in 1965, but its origins date back to the 19th century. After gaining independence, the country needed to define itself as a nation and embark on a civilizational project—an ideal that contributed to the search for a model of education and training. This effort led to the establishment of the National School of Music in 1882 (renamed as the National Conservatory of Music in 1911) and the National School of Fine Arts in 1886. These units, although directly related to the University, operated independently.
In 1936, during the height of the modernist movement in the country, the Faculty of Architecture and Fine Arts was formed. This initiative coincided with the construction of the campus where the University currently operates, shaping the development and growth of the city.
By 1965, the Conservatory of Music, Fine Arts, and Architecture were integrated under the reform led by Rector José Félix Patiño. This reform aimed to reduce the number of faculties by integrating disciplines and expanding the range of existing programs. Over time, programs in Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and Film and Television were gradually incorporated and created.
Currently, the Faculty of Arts offers 7 undergraduate programs, 19 master’s degrees, 4 specializations, and 1 doctoral program. It consists of 6 departments, 4 research institutes, and has 2297 undergraduate students, 535 postgraduate students, and 280 full-time faculty members. The faculty occupies 10 buildings, has 5 auditoriums, and houses 12 laboratories.
The Faculty is dedicated to preserving, generating, and transferring knowledge in the field of the arts, in order to educate and update professionals at the cutting edge, to support the government and society in general in project realization, and to advance the state of the arts.
It offers training and outreach programs, based on the development of creation and research, under criteria of academic excellence, aimed at strengthening the cultural and artistic aspects of the national project.

Pepe Sánchez
Luis Guillermo Sánchez Méndez, better known as Pepe Sánchez (born October 26, 1934, in Bogotá – died December 21, 2016), was a Colombian television, theater, and film director, screenwriter, and actor.
Pepe Sánchez was one of the most prolific figures in Colombian television and cinema. His notable works include “Don Chinche,” which was watched by over 14 million Colombians every Sunday during its time. He garnered several awards at the India Catalina Awards, including Best Humorous Series (1984), Best Story and Screenplays (1986), and Best Program of the 20th Century (2000).
Between 1987 and 1992, he created “Romeo y Buseta,” which inherited the narrative style of “Don Chinche.” The protagonist, William Guillermo, portrayed by Luis Eduardo Arango, was a lively worker and public transport driver, a character that first appeared in “Don Chinche.”
In 1995, he won the Best Director award at the TV y Novelas, Simón Bolívar, and India Catalina Awards for “Café, con aroma de mujer.” The series also brought recognition to its lead actress, Margarita de Francisco.
Sánchez received accolades as an actor as well. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Las Juanas” (1998) and won the TV y Novelas Award for Best Antagonistic Actor for his role in “Pura Sangre” in 2008.
Among his recognitions, his feature film “San Antoñito” stood out, being selected for the International Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival in 1986. He also received several honorary awards, such as Director of the Century (2000), Lifetime Achievement (2004), and the Víctor Nieto Award for Lifetime Achievement (2005).
In 2016, film director Ciro Guerra, along with Mario Mitrotti and other authors, led the enactment of the “Ley Pepe Sánchez” (Pepe Sánchez Law). This law seeks to ensure royalty payments to directors and scriptwriters. The “Ley Pepe Sánchez” was unanimously approved by the Congress of the Republic in 2017, a few months after Pepe Sánchez’s passing.
