Mission & Strategy

The Latvian Academy of Culture realises accredited higher education study programmes at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels. The Research Centre and the Creative Activity Centre of the Latvian Academy of Culture as well as the students and the lecturers of the Academy take part in the realisation of scientific research and artistic creation. The aim of the National Film School is to implement academic and professional higher education programmes, life-long learning and professional development programmes that are up-to-date and in line with international standards.
Study programmes aim at training theoretically and practically educated professionals in Audiovisual Arts. During their studies, all students acquire comprehensive and thorough knowledge on the diverse aspects of the aesthetics, the analysis and the production of audiovisual art, gain skills in the creation and production of films, learn how to work on the set in different departments, thus also acquiring teamwork skills.

Inga Pērkone-Redoviča

Field of Teaching: History of World Cinema, Introduction to Cinema Theory, History of Latvian Cinema, Theater and Cinema Criticism Seminar, Theoretical Aspects of Cinema History
Major Achievements:

Dr.art., film researcher, leading researcher of the Scientific Research Center, Head of the theory specialization of the Bachelor’s study program “Audiovisual Art”. Former director of the Riga Film Museum (1993–2004) and the Chief custodian of the funds (1988–1993).

Author of the books: “You, the great evening sun! Essays on Modernism in Latvian Films” (2013), “I can just love … The Image of a Woman in Latvian Films” (2008), “Cinema in Latvia. 1920 – 1940 ”(2007) and co-author of “ Reality of productions: History of Latvian Actor Cinema ”(2011), author and compiler of the collection of scientific articles“ Te-Ki-La ”of the LAC (2010-2013), member of editorial board of the periodical“ Kino Raksti ”, member and author of many publications, compiler and co-author  of the international electronic collection of articles “KinoKultura. Latvian Issue” (2012), etc.

Organized the International Summer School of Film History in Riga (1995; 1998; 1999), the World Conference of Latvian Cinematographers (1990), international conferences, including the latest: “The Idea of the Leftism in Culture. Password – Asja” (2015), etc.

Ivars Bērziņš

Field of Teaching: Culture management, Culture marketing, Culture and experience economy, Types of private financing and its attraction methods, Cultural marketing and fundraising
Major Achievements:

Doctor of Philosophy Ivars Bērziņš has been a lecturer at the Academy since 1997. He has designed a Master’s program in Cultural Management and has managed a Master’s sub-program in International Media and Cultural Management.

He studied choir conducting at the Latvian Academy of Music and the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, and earned an academic degree in cultural management from the Hamburg University of Music and Theater. He holds a PhD from the University of Münster for his dissertation “Privatization in the Field of Culture”.  Being the chief conductor of the 20th and 21st General Latvian Song Festivals, conductor of the Latvian Radio Choir, he has founded and conducted a professional chamber choir “Sindi Putnu Dārzs”. He gave concerts in many European countries, won international competitions, won Grand Prix in Spain, Finland and Latvia. He worked as the intendant of the Latvian National Opera, a project coordinator of the Goethe Institute in Latvia, a member of the Councils of the Soros Foundation in Latvia and the Latvian Culture Foundation, the director of the Latvian-German Culture, Education and Information Foundation.  Publishes articles in Latvian and foreign academic journals, participates in scientific conferences, delivers guest lectures at Latvian, Polish and German universities. He is the founder of the Latvian New Theater Institute and a member of the board of the Riga Richard Wagner Theater Renovation Foundation.

He has been awarded a commemorative badge of 1991 barricades’ participant and a letter of commendation from the Ministry of Culture of Latvia. In 2021 he has been awarded the Cross of Recognition and appointed as Commander of the Cross of Recognition.

Zane Šiliņa

Field of Teaching: History of World Literature: Medieval and Renaissance Literature, World Artistic Culture, Modern Drama and Literature, History of World Literature: 20th cent. literature, Shakespeare, Play analysis
Major Achievements:

Z. Šiliņa holds a Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree from the Academy (dissertation “The Idea of the New World in Rainis’ Dramaturgy”, 2007), she has been working at the Academy since 1996. In 2014, the Senate of the Academy elected Prof. Z. Šiliņa as the Vice-Rector of the Academy in academic work. She regularly participates in scientific conferences both in Latvia and abroad, has also participated in organizing several conferences. Z. Šiliņa’s research activities are focused on literature and drama in a broad cultural context. She has published more than 25 scientific articles in Latvian, English and Lithuanian.
