School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa invites applications for a tenure‐ track Assistant Professor position in Digital Cinema Production to begin in Fall 2025. We are looking for a collaborative and talented colleague, with strong creative initiative who is well prepared to teach intensive hands-on introductory and advanced production classes.
As Hawai’i’s Film School, School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) is at the forefront of cinematic arts education in the Pacific. Located in Honolulu at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, SCA is dedicated to academic and creative excellence through its bachelor of arts degree designed to encourage innovation and collaboration with an emphasis on Hawaii, Pacific, and Asia. Focused in the heart of a state with a robust film and television industry, SCA encourages professional development, mentorship and community engagement through a variety of programs, including internships, master classes, and industry screenings. SCA nurtures and empowers students to develop their own unique voice as storytellers. Exploring creative media forms rooted in personal experience and place-based learning through animation, cinema studies, digital cinema production and screenwriting.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach beginning to advanced courses in Digital Cinema Production;
- Assist in the development, support, and teaching of a curricular program in digital cinema production, stressing multiple theoretical, critical, historical, and technical approaches in the study, design, application, and distribution of digital cinema;
- Development of creative scholarship in your field of specialization, leading to public screenings and presentations;
- Involvement in and presentations at nationally recognized professional organizations/conferences in your field;
- Work towards the development of internship opportunities for students; 6. Supervise student production labs;
- Involvement in service to the department, university, and community; 8. Advise student majors in the Digital Cinema Production and Cinematic Arts tracks; 9. Other duties as assigned by the Chair.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Terminal degree (M.F.A. or equivalent) in Digital Cinema Production or closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (degree must be completed by August 2025);
- Professional experience and accomplishment in Digital Cinema Production as demonstrated through the creation, direction, and collaboration on projects; 3. Hands-on experience teaching Digital Cinema Production classes;
- Ability to teach hands-on Introduction to Digital Cinema Production;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience in and comprehensive knowledge of:
- Location Sound Recording
- Post Production Sound: sound mixing, sound design, foley and sound editing ● Digital Production software including but not limited to Adobe Creative Cloud, AVID, and Pro Tools
- Camera Operation
- Lighting Set-Ups
- Visual Storytelling
- A demonstrated ability to support the university’s mission of diversity, equity and inclusion.
