Mission & Strategy
BFA (Beijing Film Academy) is the only film academy in China and the largest film academy in Asia. Through 70 years’ development, it has built up a multidisciplinary and multilevel cultivation system that embraces the entire spectrum of film-making, including production,teaching, creation and research for training advanced film talents. The famous Chinese directors such as Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Jia Zhangke and Gu Changwei all graduated from BFA – the cradle of Chinese film producers.

Qian Jun
Qian Jun, male, Han nationality, native of Hubei, born in March 1964, doctor of management, professor. In July 1986, he graduated from Beijing Forestry University and worked on campus. In June 2013, he served as Party Secretary of Beijing University of Architecture. In April 2014, he served as Party Secretary and President of Beijing Education Examination Authority. He was appointed as Party Secretary of Beijing Film Academy in March 2019.
Hu Zhifeng
Hu Zhifeng is the deputy secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of The Beijing Film Academy. He was born in 1965, and graduated from Shandong University and Beijing Normal University with a doctorate of Literature. Mr. Hu was the first “Changjiang Scholar” professor in the field of academic media. He co-founded China’s radio and television arts, and is one of the founding fathers of the study of Chinese Television Aesthetics. The study of Chinese Television Communication Art would not exist without Mr. Hu, this famous television programming designer. Senior Visiting Scholar of Harvard University.

Zhi Hongwei, female, Han nationality, born in May 1971, served as Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Committee of Beijing Film Academy in November 2017. In July 1993, she graduated from the Capital Normal University, majoring in Chinese language and literature education. In the same year, she worked in the student department of Capital Normal University. In September 1995, she was transferred to the Beijing Municipal People’s Procuratorate. She has held as deputy director of the second branch of the Beijing Municipal People’s Procuratorate of Complaint, the Assistant Procurator, and the Procurator. She has held as a Party member of Pinggu district people’s procuratorate, director of the Political Section and a member of the procuratorial committee. She has also held as deputy director of the Beijing Municipal People’s Procuratorate of the third branch of political, the division director and the procurator.
Hu Qiang
Hu Qiang, male, born in 1969, professor, postgraduate tutor, The Great Wall scholar, first-class director of China. He graduated from Beijing Film Academy with bachelor’s degree in Film Performance, master’s degree in Art, and doctor’s degree in Directing. He served as dean of higher vocational and continuing education college of Beijing Film Academy, director of Academic Affair Office, Secretary of Youth League Committee, and President of Student Union of Beijing Film Academy. He was a member of the Youth Federation of Central State Organs, a member of the tenth standing committee of Beijing Youth Federation. He was a member of the working committee of Chinese TV drama directors. He was also a member of China Film Directors Association and a member of China Film Artists Association. He is vice President of Beijing Film Academy and director of Youth Film Studio now.

Zhang Yimou
Zhang Yimou ([ʈʂáŋ î.mǒʊ]; born 2 April 1950) is a Chinese film director, producer, writer, actor, professor and former cinematographer. Considered a key figure of China’s Fifth Generation filmmakers, he made his directorial debut in 1988 with Red Sorghum, which won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Zhang has won numerous awards and recognitions, with three Academy Awards nominations for Best Foreign Language Film for Ju Dou in 1990, Raise the Red Lantern in 1991, and Hero in 2003; a Silver Lion, two Golden Lion prizes and the Glory to the Filmmaker Award at the Venice Film Festival; Grand Jury Prize, Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and Technical Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival; the Golden Bear, the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 1993, he was a member of the jury at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival. Zhang directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games as well as the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, which received considerable international acclaim.
One of Zhang’s recurrent themes is the resilience of Chinese people in the face of hardship and adversity, a theme which has been explored in such films as To Live (1994) and Not One Less (1999). His films are particularly noted for their rich use of colour, as can be seen in some of his early films, like Raise the Red Lantern, and in his wuxia films like Hero and House of Flying Daggers. His highest-budgeted film to date is the 2016 monster film The Great Wall, set in Imperial China and starring Matt Damon. In 2010, Zhang received an honorary doctorate from Yale, and in 2018, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Boston University. In 2022, he joined the Beijing Film Academy as a distinguished professor.
Wu Ziniu
A member of the 1982 graduating class of the Beijing Film Academy, Wu was assigned to the Xiaoxing Film Studio. There he directed four films, including the children’s film, The Candidate, the war films Secret Decree and Dove Tree, and the drama, The Last Day of Winter. After The Last Day of Winter, Wu expanded to other studios, working with the August First Film Studio to produce the war film, Evening Bell, which, despite the heavy hand of censorship, managed to win several international awards, including the Silver Bear – Special Jury Prize at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival.
Throughout the late 1980s, Wu would continue to direct films, often highlighting the brutality of war and the effect on civilians, as in 1988’s Joyous Heroes and its sequel Between Life and Death. With the 1990s, Wu would draw on foreign capital, primarily from Hong Kong to help produce his historical films Sparkling Fox and The Big Mill.
Xie Fei
Xie Fei has taught at his alma mater as an instructor and professor since and was the vice-president of that institution from 1985-1989. Although he has not made many films due to The Great Culture Revolution (1966-1976) and teaching career, most of his works are critics’ favorites. Several of them won international film festival awards. His A Girl From Human (1986) and A Mongolian Tale (1995) were commercially distributed American movie theaters.
After Song of Tibet (2000) was censored for 6 month before releasing in few theaters, he stopped making films(at the age of 59). He has worked as producer, film festival juries in China and abroad.
In 2001 he directed 23 episodes of TV drama Sun Rise adapted from a play by noted Chinese playwright Cao YU 曹禺(1910-1996).
On December 15, 2012 Xie Fei posted an open letter on Weibo a popular Chinese Blog calling for changes of film censorship and won great support from film makers.
Li Shaohong
Li Shaohong (born 7 July 1955) is a Chinese film and television director and producer. She is considered a member of the Fifth Generation movement, and China’s top woman director. Her films have won multiple awards in China and abroad.
In 1982, Li joined the Beijing Film Studio, where she worked as the assistant director for several films. In 1988, she directed her first film The Case of the Silver Snake.
Li’s 1990 film Bloody Morning was a great success, winning multiple awards in China, Taiwan, France, and Germany, including the Golden Montgolfiere at the 1992 Three Continents Festival in Nantes. She became recognized as a member of the Fifth Generation movement of Chinese cinema, a loose collection of mainland Chinese filmmakers that first emerged in the early to mid-1980s, along with other directors like Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige. Like other Fifth Generation films, Li Shaohong’s works often focus on the rural side of Chinese society.
In 1994, she directed the film Blush (Hongfen), adapted from Su Tong’s eponymous novel about two Shanghai prostitutes at the time of Liberation in 1949. The film won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Single Achievement at the 45th Berlin International Film Festival in 1995.
With the 2004 film Baober in Love, Li broke the mode of her previous works and ventured into the realm of magical realism.
Li is also a producer and has her own film production company. She has become a household name in China and is considered China’s top woman director. She has also directed several TV dramas, including Palace of Desire (1998), which won the 18th Golden Eagle award for best TV drama, and The Dream of Red Mansions (2010).
