Mission & Strategy
The Central Academy of Drama is the first theatre higher educational institution of the People’s Republic of China and now it is affiliated to China’s Ministry of Education. It is ranked as one of the best top-level drama, Film & Television arts institutions in China and has been included in the country’s ‘Double First-class’ University Plan. The Central Academy of Drama is the headquarters of China Alliance of Theatre Higher Educational Institutes, Asia Theatre Education Centre (ATEC) and World Theatre Education Alliance (WTEA). It is a world famous higher educational institute of arts.
The history of the Central Academy of Drama dates back to more than 80 years, to April 10th, 1938, when Yan An Lu Xun Art College was established. The Central Academy of Drama opened officially in December, 1949 and held the inaugural conference on 2nd of April, 1950. Chairman Mao Zedong inscribed the official name in calligraphy.
The Central Academy of Drama has two campuses, with the original one located at No. 39 Dong Mianhua Hutong, Dongcheng District, and the new one at No.4 Hong Fu Middle Rd, Changping District. Area of these two campuses reach 230, 000 m2, and the construction area is about 180,000 m2.
The Academy’s academic departments have been subdivided into Department of Acting, Department of Directing, Department of Stage Design, Department of Dramatic Literature, Department of Musical Theatre, Department of Peking Opera, Department of Western Opera, Department of Dance Theatre, Department of Puppetry Theatre, Department of Theatre Pedagogy, Department of Theatre Management, Department of Film and TV Art, Department of Theatrology, Department of Science Theatre. Majors offered at the undergraduate level include: Acting, Quyi (Chinese Melodious Art), Directing, Art Design for Theatre and Film & TV, Recording Art, Literature on Theatre and Film & TV, Theatre Studies, Musical Theatre, Theatre Pedagogy, Art Management, and Broadcast & Anchoring. The Academy has first-class discipline master’s degree and doctor’s degree authorization centers in Studies of Drama (Film & TV), and Theory Studies of Art. The Academy also has a post-doctoral research station for art studies.
The Academy has the only state-level teaching team in acting, the only state-level characteristic major in directing, the only national innovative experimental zone for talents cultivation in musical acting, and the only state-level demonstration center for experimental teaching in Drama (Film & TV). The ‘Intelligent Dramatic Art Space Laboratory’ has been approved to be a MOE Key Laboratory. The Academy also acts as headquarters of many national and international organizations, including China Committee for Promoting Art Education, China Drama Association, Committee of Directing Arts of China Theater Association, International Stage Arts Network, China Association of Stage Arts, China Centre of OISTAT, China Centre of International Association of Theatre Critics, China Stage Art Educational Alliance, Education Committee of China Musical Theatre Association, Research Centre on Theatrical Pedagogy of China’s Primary & Secondary Schools, China Collaborative Innovation Center for Theatre Arts Management, The “Belt & Road” International Film Education Alliance, and The World Dance Drama Education Alliance.
In the Academy’s long-term history, it continues to uphold the principle of realism, and inherits Chinese aesthetic traditions as well as carefully absorbs from other cultures. The Academy constantly consolidates basis and strengthens practice, and pursues the spirit of “Truth, Creation and Perfection”. The institution commits itself to training drama, film & TV art talents for the country and the world. A majority of graduates have become world-famous artists, scholars, professors and writers, who have made remarkable contributions to the prosperity and development of Chinese drama, film & TV industry.
Facing the future, the Central Academy of Drama will firmly grasp the opportunities to deepen the reform of higher education and accelerate the development of the school system. It strives to increase the quality of education and education management, promote teaching quality and reform construction, and strengthen discipline and high-level faculty team construction. The Academy also promotes organizational innovations, and carries out multilateral exchanges and cooperation with world’s drama education institutions. This ensures the comprehensive strength and overall quality of the Academy. Key Teaching Staff
Xu Yongsheng
Mr. Xu Yongsheng is a CPC member, a professor and a master’s supervisor. He now serves as Party Secretary of Party Committee of the CAD.
He also serves as Vice Chairman of National Steering Committee for Art Teaching at Higher Education Institutions, Standing Director of China Art Education Federation, a director of China Theatre Association, and Vice Chairman of Beijing Theatre Association. Besides, he is the initiator of China Collaboration Innovation Center for Theatre Arts Management (CCICTAM), and Director of CAD Academic Committee.
He graduated from the Department of Stage Design at the CAD and stayed to teach upon graduation in 1989. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Literature (Art), and a master’s degree in Theatre and Chinese Traditional Opera (Xiqu). For years, he has been engaged in teaching. He has been acting in different roles at the CAD: Deputy Director of the Department of Practical Learning, Director of Performance Centre for Practical Learning, and then Assistant to President (while being the Director of President’s Office at the same time in 2010). He became Vice President of the CAD in December 2010, and meanwhile acted as the Director of the Department of Theatre Management from December 2011 to December 2013. In September 2022, he became the Party Secretary of the CAD.
Hao Rong
Mr. Hao Rong is a CPC member, a professor and a PhD supervisor. He is President and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the CAD.
Mr. Hao is one of the initiators of the Discipline Appraisal Group for the Studies of Theatre, TV & Film under the State Council’s Academic Degrees Committee. He is Vice Director of the MOE Steering Committee for the Teaching of Theatre, TV & Film at Higher Education Institutions. Also, he is a member of the National Steering Committee for the Education of Professional Master’s Degree Programs. Besides, he is Vice President of Beijing Film Association and China Musical Association, Secretary-General of World Theatre Education Alliance, as well as Director-General of Asia Theatre Education Centre.
Mr. Hao graduated from the Acting Department of the CAD and obtained a master’s degree in Theater and Traditional Chinese Theatre (Xiqu). He had successively held many posts in the Acting Department, from Section Chief of the Teaching and Research for Speech, Vice Dean, to Secretary of the Party Branch, and Director, before he became the Assistant to President of the CAD and then Vice President. In November 2018, he was appointed as the President of the CAD.
He has engaged in the teaching, research and management of the studies of theatre & film (musical) acting for a long time and has participated in the teaching reform and exploration of theatre & film (musical) acting in the Academy. Works he directed included The Butcher, Miss Julie, Come to A Bad End, Weddings and Funerals, Vienna Coffee in the Cup, Marriage, Hamlet, Chinese Orphan, Xiaojing Hutong, etc. He acted in such plays as Couples in Relationship Crisis, Eldest Son, and Cherry Orchard. He has won the ‘Golden Lion’ Director Award of Chinese Theatre, ‘Excellent Course’ at the CAD, Second Prize (Nationally) by Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation, First Prize of Teaching Achievements of Higher Education in Beijing, ‘Prominent Teacher’ Award of Beijing Universities, etc., and titles like Talent of ‘Four Key Projects’ by Beijing Municipal Department of Publicity. He is granted Special Government Allowances by the State Council.
Song Ying
Ms. Song Ying is a professor and serves as Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the CAD. She holds a master’s degree in Art Education and Management.
She is a director of Beijing Society for Party Building at Higher Education Institutions, and a member of National Steering Committee for College Graduates’ Employment and Entrepreneurship.
She graduated from the School of Management of Beijing Normal University in 1991 as Bachelor of Law. From 2000 to 2003, she took professional post-graduate courses at Development and Educational Psychology of Beijing Normal University. In 2007, she received a master’s degree in Literature from the CAD. She started to work for the CAD in 1991, and served successively as Secretary of Youth League Committee, Deputy Director of Students Affairs Office, then Director of this office when she was Deputy Director of Teaching Affairs Office at the same time, before she became Director of the latter office. Since December 2010, she has been Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the CAD.
Chen Zhijian
Ms. Chen Zhijian is a senior accountant in the job title of professor. She now serves as the Vice President of the CAD.
She is a director of Beijing Fellowship of Non-Party Intelligentsia.
Ms. Chen graduated from Liaoning College of Finance and Economics (now known as Dongbei University of Finance and Economics), where she majored in Industrial Accounting, in July 1985 and obtained a bachelor’s degree of Economics. She started teaching at the School of Accountancy of the Central University of Finance and Economics in July 1985, where she pursued her master’s degree in Management (Accounting) from 2006 to 2008. She was transferred to the Finance Department at that university in September 1998 serving successively as the Assistant to the Director, Deputy Director and Director. In April 2012, she started working for the CAD as Chief Accountant. Since December 2020, she has been Vice President of the CAD.
Her research field is Accounting Theory and Financial Management of Higher Education. She presided over and participated in 3 ministerial research projects and published more than 10 papers in core journals. She is granted Special Government Allowances by the State Council.
Ms. Xu Zhen
Ms. Xu Zhen is a CPC member and an associate professor. She serves as Vice President of the CAD and a member of the Standing Committee of Party Committee. She holds a doctorate degree in Art and Literature.
Ms. Xu obtained her bachelor’s degree from School of Chinese Language and Literature at Henan University in 1998, and her master’s degree from School of Chinese Language and Literature at Guangxi Normal University in 2001. She started to work for the CAD in July 2004 after receiving her doctorate degree from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University in the same year. She has been, successively, the Secretary of Youth League Committee, Vice Director and then Director of Graduate Students Office, Director of Party Committee’s Office/President’s Office, and Assistant to President. She became Vice President of the CAD in September 2016.
Ge Xiuzhen
Ms. Ge Xiuzhen is a CPC member in the job title of associate professor. She now serves as Deputy Secretary and a member of Standing Committee of Party Committee, as well as Secretary of Committee for Discipline Inspection at the CAD. She holds a master’s degree.
She started to work in July 1986, since which she had successively been in different positions at Renmin University of China: Deputy Secretary of Party Branch of School of Population Studies, Vice Director of President’s Office, Vice Director of Human Resource Department, Director and Party Secretary of Service Office for Retired Staff, Deputy Secretary and Office Director of Committee for Discipline Inspection, as well as Director of Supervision Department. In August 2020, Ms. Ge was appointed to be Deputy Secretary and Secretary of Committee for Discipline Inspection of the CAD.
Sun Daqing
Mr. Sun Daqing is a professor and a PhD supervisor. He serves as the Assistant to President of the CAD, a member of Standing Committee of Party Committee, and Director of Publicity Department.
He is the Chinese member of OISTAT Education Committee, Chairman of the International Stage Design Students’ Works Exchange, Director of Beijing Association of Higher Education, Editor-in-chief of Academic Journal Drama, as well as Director of CAD Research Centre of Chinese Cultural Tourism Performances.
For years, he has been engaged in the teaching, theoretical research and practice of stage design, and has published academic papers, monographs, and textbooks including Visual Art in Drama and Contemporary Art, Basics of Stage Design, Stage Art, etc. He worked as a stage designer for modern plays, traditional Chinese theatres, western operas, and puppetry theatres among other theatrical forms. He is famous for his designs for Visitors on the Icy Mountain (an opera), Deng Shichang (Shanghai opera), The Xi’an Incident (a Beijing opera), etc.
He has won multiple awards and honors, including Best Stage Design of the 5th Minorities Art Festival of China, Best Stage Design in the 8th Chinese Drama ‘Golden Lion’ Award, Academy Award of the China Institute of Stage Design, Talent of ‘Four Key Projects’ by Beijing Municipal Department of Publicity, Teaching Award of Beijing Higher Education, and Outstanding Teaching Materials for Undergraduates of Beijing Universities. His works are included in authoritative collections at home and abroad, such as World Stage Design 1990-2005, China Stage Design 1983-1999, and China Stage Design 2000-2010.
Chen Lei
Mr. Chen Lei, a CPC member, is the Assistant to President of the CAD. He is an expert of National Centre for Schooling Development Programme.
He obtained his master’s degree after his study at the Directing Department of the CAD from September 2006 to July 2009. Since 2003, he has successively held many posts, including the Session Chief of Teaching Materials of Teaching Affairs Office, Session Chief of Catering of Logistic Department, Deputy Director of Logistics and Assets Management Department, Deputy Director of Office for Preparation and Management of Changping Campus (part-time), Deputy Director and then Director of Logistic Department, and Secretary of the Party Branch of Logistic Department (part-time). He was appointed as the Assistant to President in January 2019.
Successful Graduates
Jackson Yee
Jackson Yee (born 28 November 2000) is a Chinese actor, dancer and singer. After a talent manager discovered him at a children’s talent competition, where he performed a hip-hop dance, and signed to TF Entertainment, Yee became the youngest member of the Chinese boy band TFBoys in 2013.
Yee is also a solo artist and singer. His single in 2017, Li Sao (The Lament) was named “Mandarin Song of the Year” by Billboard Radio China. Yee also has starring roles in The Longest Day in Chang’an (2019) and Forward (2019). He received critical acclaim for his performance in Better Days (2019) and his 2020 film A Little Red Flower was a further success. He also won the Best New Performer Award in the 39th Hong Kong Film Awards for his first lead film role, Bei in Better Days.
Yee ranked 8th on Forbes China Celebrity 100 list in 2019, and 1st in 2020 and 2021. According to Chinese media reports in 2019, he was one of the most commercially valuable stars in China.
Chen Xingxu
Chen Xingxu also known as Oliver Chen (born 31 March 1996) is a Chinese actor and model. He is known for his roles as Yang Kang in The Legend of the Condor Heroes (2017) and Gu Xiaowu / Li Chengyin in Goodbye My Princess (2019) and was later recognize more in his role as Tan Xuan Lin in Fall In Love (2021) and is currently rising after his drama The Starry Love (2023) aired where he portrayed the role of Shaodian Youqin
Mao Xiaotong
Mao Xiaotong (born 16 February 1988), also known as Rachel Momo, is a Chinese actress. She is best known for her supporting roles in Empresses in the Palace (2012), Love O2O (2016) and The Princess Weiyoung (2016).
Gao Weiguang
Gao Wei Guang (born 16 January 1983) is a Chinese actor and supermodel. He is known for his lead roles in hit dramas Candle In The Tomb: The Wrath Of Time, Eternal Love Of Dream, etc.
Lin Peng
Lin Peng (born October 25, 1986) is a Chinese actress. Peng began her career by appearing in a Jackie Chan film Little Big Soldier.
