Mission & Strategy
The Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC) comprises the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema, a historical institute of advanced learning and training in the field of cinematography, and the Cineteca Nazionale, one of the oldest and most important film archives in the world.
Founded in 1935 and a very active element of the modern context from a scientific and cultural point of view ever since, CSC has been a prominent landmark for cinematography in Italy and worldwide.
The Scuola Nazionale di Cinema, a founding member of GEECT and CILECT, is a major training institution for all professionals in the field of cinematography: actors, film directors, directors of photography, set designers, costume designers, screenwriters, film editors, producers, musicians, sound technicians, digital cinematography experts and animation artists. Moreover, the School is an ideal setting for sharing and exchanging views and ideas for students, scholars, teachers and researchers from all over the world.
The School is organised in 14 didactic areas, each of which is supervised by internationally renowned artists: Chiara Magri (Animation), Maurizio Millenotti (Costume Design), Pasquale Scimeca (Documentary), Giuseppe Lanci (Photography), Francesca Calvelli (Film Editing), Gianluca Arcopinto (Production), Maurizio Nichetti (Advertising and Industrial Film), Giancarlo Giannini (Acting), Daniele Luchetti (Directing), Daniele Segre (Audio-visual Reportage), Franco Bernini (Screenwriting), Francesco Frigeri (Set Design), Stefano Campus (Sound Design) Alvise Avati, Renato Pezzella, Eros Puglielli and Daniele Tomassetti (Visual Effect Supervision & Production).
The central campus in Rome is located on via Tuscolana, opposite the Istituto Luce and the historical Cinecittà studios, which saw the production of films that made Italian cinematography renowned around the world.
Thanks to its regional locations, the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema is present across the entire country: the Animation program is held in Turin; the Advertising and Industrial Film program in Milan; the Documentary program in Palermo; the Audio-visual Reportage program in L’Aquila.
Open space / open mind. The Scuola Nazionale di Cinema is not simply a school: it is way more.
An “open space” to meet, discuss, share and be involved in the activities and events of the Cineteca Nazionale, one of the most important film archives in the world; of the Luigi Chiarini Library, the oldest film library in Europe; of CSC Production, a company which was born to endorse the ideas and projects of our students.
An “open mind” is the goal of each student, who is at the core of an ongoing experiment for the development and innovation of the rules and languages of cinema, carried out through debates, panel discussions and seminars in cooperation with the major teaching institutes of the world.
