Mission & Strategy

The Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ) is the only arts university located in the heart of Jakarta, Indonesia, since its establishment in 1970.

Academically, IKJ has been a pioneer in the development of arts and the art industry in Indonesia and internationally, serving as a center for the thought, development, and growth of traditional arts – not only from Betawi culture but encompassing the entire archipelago – as well as contemporary arts in Indonesia.

Having passed its ‘golden age’, IKJ has now etched its history as the first Arts University to offer all fields of art study within a single campus, featuring proficient educators and alumni. Various study programs are encompassed within three faculties: the Faculty of Film and Television (FFTV), the Faculty of Fine Arts (FSR), the Faculty of Performing Arts (FSP), along with a Graduate School. IKJ is renowned as a leading national laboratory in the development of urban culture in the fields of visual arts, performing arts, film, and television. IKJ has nurtured professional artists through an intensive learning environment created based on the highest artistic quality, creative experimentation, close collaboration among artistic disciplines, and in line with a broad social and cultural understanding.

IKJ also boasts a strategic location within Jakarta’s Center for Arts and Culture – Taman Ismail Marzuki, owned and supported by the Jakarta Provincial Government with the goal of enhancing the Indonesian arts and culture ecosystem and promoting the national creative industry, while preserving the essence of national and international cultural diversity.

Apart from producing graduates actively engaged in urban art and city culture, IKJ also produces professional experts who drive the development of various national art-based industries and enrich international cultural diversity while maintaining their identity, returning to their roots, remaining resilient, and continually growing.

Wregas Bhanuteja

Field of Studies: Film and Television Faculty
Major Achievements:
  • Film director
  • Screenwriter

Raphael Wregas Bhanuteja, an alumnus of the Faculty of Film and Television at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ), is the first Indonesian film director to receive the Best Short Film Award at the Semaine de la Critique, Cannes Film Festival 2016, for his short film titled “Prenjak” (In The Year of Monkey). He also won the Leica Cine Discovery Prize for the best short film at the same festival. This marked the first time that an Indonesian name was honored with such an award.

His first feature film, “Penyalin Cahaya” (2021), premiered at the Busan International Film Festival 2021 and won 12 Citra Awards at the 2021 Indonesian Film Festival. The festival was dominated by IKJ’s academic community, and Wregas was awarded Best Director.

During his time as a student, Wregas began to build his reputation by writing and directing several short films. At the age of 22, he was recognized as the youngest director in the competition at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival 2015, in the Berlinale Shorts Competition category. His short film “Lembusura” (2014), a blend of fiction and documentary, centered around the eruption of Mount Kelud and was selected for the festival, despite having a production budget of only around thirty-five thousand Indonesian rupiahs. After completing his major in film directing in 2014, his final project titled “Lemantun” (2015) received numerous awards at various short film festivals, including Best Short Film at the XXI Short Film Festival 2015, Best Short Film at the Apresiasi Film Indonesia 2015, and Best Short Film at the Piala Maya FFI 2015. This film also swept awards at the Cinema XXI Short Film Festival in all jury categories, including Best Fiction Narrative Short Film (IMPAS Jury Choice), Best Fiction Narrative Short Film (Official Jury Choice), and Audience Choice for Best Short Film.

In 2016, his film “Prenjak” received other awards, such as the Cinema Nova Awards for Best Short Film at the Melbourne International Film Festival 2016, Best Short Film at the Silver Screen Awards of the Singapore International Film Festival 2016, and Best Short Film at the Prague Short Film Festival 2016. It also won the Citra Award for Best Short Film at the Indonesian Film Festival 2016. His interpretation of Guruh Soekarno Putra’s Chopin Larung in the short film “The Floating Chopin,” made with Ersya Ruswandono as the Director of Photography, was selected to compete in the 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival 2016.

In 2019, Wregas returned with a short film titled “Tak Ada yang Gila di Kota Ini” (No One is Crazy in This Town, 2019). The film competed in the Wide Angle: Asian Short Film Competition program at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) held from October 3-12, 2019, in Busan, South Korea, and won the Citra Award for Best Short Film at the Indonesian Film Festival 2019.

Aside from winning the Citra Award at FFI 2021, Wregas hopes that his feature film “Penyalin Cahaya” will be watched by everyone to inspire a sense of purpose and strength, encouraging the public to address the urgent issue of sexual violence and harassment. This aligns with the issuance of Regulation Number 30/2021 on the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in Higher Education Institutions.

His second feature film, “Budi Pekerti” (2022), premiered at one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, the World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023, from September 7-17, in the United States. The film is scheduled to be released in Indonesia at the end of 2023.

Yandy Laurens

Field of Studies: Film and Television Faculty
Major Achievements:
  • Director
  • Film Scriptwriter

The writer and director, a graduate of the Faculty of Film and Television at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ), was entrusted earlier this year to direct the film “Keluarga Cemara,” which was adapted from a popular 90s soap opera of the same name. This film was successful, reaching 1.7 million viewers and ranking fifth among the highest-grossing films of 2019.

Previously, Yandy Laurens had captured the audience’s attention through a number of web series for products or as advertisements.

Yandy Laurens’ daily life is rooted in his childhood experiences in his hometown of Makassar, South Sulawesi. Born into a Chinese ethnic family, this filmmaker from Makassar was intimidated by the attitudes of his schoolmates. This situation actually brought Yandy closer to his family. His experiences from childhood to high school led him to make the decision to move and pursue film studies at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ).

All of his film works stem from simple everyday experiences that explore interpersonal relationships based on his own experiences.

In contrast to films, the web series created by Yandy Laurens incorporates the values of the advertised products. The content of the advertisement depends on the storytelling goal, often taking the form of a “soft sell.” However, if the aim of the web series is to increase sales, it typically leans toward a “hard sell.” This varies depending on the objective, whether it is to create awareness.

Yandy suggests that beginners in cinematography should create films that are closely connected to everyday life. What’s most important is the perspective from which one views it because this determines the interpretation.

Aline Jusria

Field of Studies: Faculty of Film and Television
Major Achievements:
Aline Jusria Umiati graduated from the Faculty of Film and Television, Jakarta Arts Institute in 2003.
However, since 1999 he has been an editor for documentary films many times. Aline won the Eagle Awards for Best Editing of a documentary film for the film Di Atas Rail Mati in 2006.
Almost every year she has been nominated at the Indonesian Film Festival since 2010 and 2011 respectively, Aline received the Citra Cup award as Best Image Editor for FFI, in addition to the best awards in other events until 2019 (2013 & 2018 Maya Cup).
