Mission & Strategy

IADT is unique. Ireland’s only institute of art, design and technology with a specific focus on the creative cultural and technological sectors, when you visit IADT you’ll discover a campus alive with ideas, innovation and entrepreneurial activity.

Programmes in both the Faculty of Film, Art + Creative Technologies and the Faculty of Enterprise + Humanities are unique in that they combine practical, transferrable skills with academic learning. Key Teaching Staff

Barry Dignam

Field of Teaching: Head of Department of European Projects / FilmEU
Major Achievements:

In 2021 Barry Dignam was appointed to the new role of Head of European Projects at the National Film School, IADT. Formerly he was the Head of Department of Film & Media, Chair of Film & Television and Irish Course Director of Viewfinder (the Erasmus+ Joint Master of Art in Cinematography).

As an educator, Barry has over twenty years’ experience in teaching, academic strategy and quality assurance.

He studied Drama at Trinity College Dublin and Film at the National Film School IADT. As a filmmaker, he has made many multi-award-winning short films including ‘Chicken’, ‘Dream Kitchen’ and ‘A Ferret Called Mickey’. He’s had been nominated for a Palme d’Or at Cannes and a Berlin Bear. ‘Monged’ a feature he co-wrote with Gary Duggan premiered in 2015.

 

 

Damien Byrne

Field of Teaching: Animation, The MA in 3D Animation, the chair of the postgraduate Certificate in Production Management for Animation.
Major Achievements:

Damien Byrne is an educator and multi award winning animation producer with over 20 years’ experience in animation production.

Dr Justin Carville

Field of Teaching: Film + Media, Historical and Theoretical Studies in Photography
Major Achievements:

A former Government of Ireland Senior Research Scholar in the Humanities and Social Sciences and a Government of Ireland Research Fellow in the Humanities and Social Sciences, his research interests are in the historiography of photography, colonial and post-colonial photography, photography and the city and the place of photography in antiquarianism, natural history, folklore and ethnography.

His is the author of Photography and Ireland (Reaktion, 2011) and as editor Visualizing Dublin: Visual Culture, Modernity and the Representation of Urban Space (Peter Lang, 2014) and with Sigrid Lien Contact Zones: Photography, Migration and Cultural Encounters in the United States (Leuven University Press, 2021).

He is currently working on a book tentatively titled The Ungovernable Eye: Photography, Ethnography and Race.

Dr Michael Connerty

Field of Teaching: Lecturer/Course co-chair (Animation)
Major Achievements:

“I deliver modules in Critical and Contextual Studies (Film and animation history/Visual culture) to all year groups. This currently includes classes from the (BA Hons.) Animation, and (B.A. Hons.) Visual Communications Design programmes, as well as an elective module, open to students across the Faculty, titled ‘Introduction to Comics’. “

David Cooper

Field of Teaching: Film + Media, Lecturer in Multi Camera Broadcast Production
Major Achievements:

David has 35 years experience in Television and Broadcast covering Single camera Documentary, Studio operations, Editing, Studio builds, Lighting and Outside Broadcasts, Studio builds.

David is lecturing in the National Film School for all 4 year groups of Film and Television, Creative Media Technology, Creative Music Production also Masters in Broadcast Production Radio and Television.

He holds a Masters in Broadcast Production Radio and Television From IADT.

Dr Mark Curran

Field of Teaching: Film + Media
Major Achievements:

Dr. Mark Curran holds a PhD from the Centre for Transcultural Research + Media Practice, DIT, is Lecturer + Year Tutor on the BA (Hons) Photography programme where he also supervises Masters By Research (MRes.) students. Since 2011, he has been Visiting Professor on the MA in Visual + Media Anthropology, Freie Universität Berlin.

Paul Freaney

Field of Teaching: Film + Media
Major Achievements:

“I am the course leader and tutor on the Masters in Screenwriting Programme and I am the scriptwriting tutor for the BA in Film and Television.
I am an Academic Tutor on the BA in Film and Television and I supervise the student’s final year Dissertations.
I teach courses in Aesthetics and in Greek Tragedy.”

Vanessa Gildea

Field of Teaching: Head of Department Film + Media
Major Achievements:

Vanessa is an award-winning producer / director / writer and Head of Department Film + Media, National Film School, IADT. She holds an MA in Screenwriting and a BA in Media & Communications / English. She lectures in the Dept of Film + Media & Dept of Humanities at IADT in writing, producing, directing, documentary and the history of Irish TV Drama. She lectured on the BA Film + TV in Griffith College Dublin, and guest lectures at Notre Dame University Indiana, Colaiste Dhulaigh, DIT, UL.

Geoffrey Perrin

Field of Teaching: Film + Media
Major Achievements:

Geoffrey Perrin Programme Chair of Creative Music Production and also lecturers in Sound Design, Animation, Art and Visual Communication Design.

David Quin

Field of Teaching: Animation Lecturer
Major Achievements:

David Quin has lectured in Animation in IADT since 1999, predominantly with the DL832 Animation Stage 3 undergraduate students. His work with undergraduate students centres around questions of client interaction and information transfer, communicating difficult subjects to diverse audiences through animation.

David is also involved in action research and international collaboration in the field of higher education teaching and learning. David is an IADT coordinator on two International Credit Mobility (ICM) projects and on an EU KA2 project (DESTIN). His personal research work revolves around the exploration of animation as an experimental medium and questions of dedigitisation.

David Quin is also heavily involved in Teaching and Learning. He’s been a member of the IADT Academic Council and IADT’s Teaching and Learning Committee since 2010. From Jan 2014, he became one of IADT’s lead representatives on the TEMPUS ALIGN project, helping National Quality Assurance Agencies and Higher Education Institutions from Armenia, Ukraina and Russia to “achieve and check the alignment between academic programmes and qualification frameworks”.

David Quin also works on international revalidation and programmatic review panels for agencies such as SKVC in Lithuania and AZVO in Croatia. From 2010, David Quin completed a series of Level 9 Teaching and Learning modules, culminating in a Postgraduate Diploma in Learning, Teaching and Assessment in 2013. He completed a Masters by Research in the Creative Arts in 2016 – his research project was entitled ‘Disruptive Change and The Digital Turn in Irish Animation Filmmaking’. In 2017, David Quin was a member of IADT’s Award Winning DELTA Project Team.

Successful Graduates

Louise Bagnall

Major Achievements:

Louise Bagnall is known for her work on Late Afternoon (2017), The Breadwinner (2017) and Song of the Sea (2014). She is an Irish filmmaker and a creative director at Cartoon Saloon in Kilkenny. Louise has directed several short animated films including Late Afternoon, Cúl An Tí, Loose Ends and Donkey.

Vincent Lambe

Major Achievements:

Vincent Lambe is an Oscar-nominated writer, director and producer from Ireland. He is a double winner of the Young Director Award in Cannes and has been nominated for an Irish Film & Television Academy Award (IFTA). He has also won awards at several international film festivals including the Krakow Film Festival, the Odense International Film Festival, an Emerging Directors Award and a Rising Star Award from Irish Screen America.

Robbie Ryan

Major Achievements:

Robbie Ryan is an Irish cinematographer. He is best known for his work in Fish Tank (2009), Slow West (2015), Amercican Honey (2016) and The Favourite (2018) for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Achievement in Cinematography.
