Mission & Strategy

Universidade Lusófona assumes itself as the leading provider of film and media education in Portugal and an active participant in the European training and research landscape in all these areas.
The film and media arts department at Universidade Lusófona is committed to providing hands-on specialized skill training, to foster individual and collaborative creative growth, and to serve as a testing ground for the application of emerging film and media technologies. Our department promotes both initial, continuous and advance training in the different areas of film and media creation and development, besides actively being engaged in several research projects with partners and
organizations at a national and international level. The film and media arts department offers state of the art facilities and equipments in the midst of a vibrant environment that nourishes our students talent and their strive for creative and technical fulfillment. The department and the students’ productions are regularly funded by the Portuguese Film Institute (ICA) and the university is a full member of CILECT – Centre International de Liaison des Écoles de Cinéma et de Televisión and GEECT – Groupe European de Écoles de cinema et television, besides being accredited by the EU for the provision of initial and continuous training namely via its Eramus Mundus Masters: Kino Eyes and DocNomads.

Sandra Ramos

Field of Teaching: Digital Animation and Design
Major Achievements:

Has a degree in Equipment Design and a Animation Directing course from La Poudrière. She teaches at the Digital Animation Degree in Universidade Lusófona curriculum units about Drawing and Traditional Animation Techniques.

Soraia Vasconcelos

Field of Teaching: Plastic Arts and Photography
Major Achievements:

Studied Painting, Photography and Philosophy. PhD in Visual Arts by the University of Algarve (2014), supported by a grant from FCT. Graduated from the Fine Arts College of Lisbon (2002), realizing a Technical Photography course at ETIC (2002). She holds a postgraduate degree in Digital Imaging at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2004) and a Postgraduate degree in Philosophy – Aesthetics from the New University of Lisbon (2010).

Maintains since 2000 a continuous artistic activity, performing solo and group exhibitions in various galleries and institutions and participating in artist residencies. In 2005 she was selected to participate in the 1st edition of the Photography Course of the Gulbenkian Creativity and Artistic Creation Programme, from which originates, in 2006, the photographers collective DOZE, with whom she develops work in the areas of photography and editing, including the project “Paisagem e Povoamento” (Landscape and Settlement). In 2007, she is hosted by INEB (Porto) in the Residency Program: Art, Science and Technology (DGArtes / Ciência Viva). In 2008 she receives the Young Creators grant of Centro Nacional de Cultura.

In 2011, due to a growing interest in drawing and printing techniques, she joins Contraprova – Printmaking Workshop. In 2013 co-organizes the artist residency program, Replica – Reflection on Contemporary Printmaking, with Margarida Palma of Oficina Bartolomeu Santos (OBS) in Tavira. In 2014 she becomes a member of the the board at OBS.

Victor Candeias

Field of Teaching: Documentary
Major Achievements:

Victor Candeias holds a Master in Film Studies and has been both a producer and a director for short films, documentaries and commercial videos since 1990. Some of his films received awards, including the “D. Quijote” for the short “Night Story”.

He published a book on the subject of documentary scriptwriting and filmmaking in 2003.

He is a regular lecturer on documentary and fiction subjects at the film graduating course of Lusófona University since 2001.

Victor Flores

Field of Teaching: Photography
Major Achievements:

Victor Flores holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from Universidade Nova de Lisboa since 2009. He is a Associate Professor at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias where he lectures ‘Visual Culture’, ‘Social History of Technical Images’, ‘Methods in Image Analysis’ and ‘Cultural Programming’. He is a member of the Research Center in Communication, Art and New Technologies (CICANT) and heads the Masters Program in Cultural Programming and Management. He has published books such as ‘The Technical Images and its Beliefs’ (Vega, 2012), ‘Minimalism and Post-Minimalism: Form, Anti-Form and Body in the Work of Robert Morris’ (Labcom, 2007). He heads the scientific research project ‘Stereo Visual Culture. The Visual Culture of Portuguese Stereoscopic Photography’ funded by the Portuguese National Foundation for Science and Technology in 2012.

Margarida Cardoso

Field of Teaching: Films Studies
Major Achievements:

The documentaries “Natal 71/Christmas 71” and “Kuxa Kanema -The Birth of Cinema “, and the feature films “The Murmuring Coast” and “Yvone Kane” are amongst her best known films, and all relate to her experience in colonial and post-colonial Portuguese Africa.
Her films where screened in many festivals, such as Rotterdam, Venice, and Locarno where she was given the award “Leopard de Demain” in 1999. In 2005, Margarida Cardoso received the title of Commander of the Order of Prince Henry for her contribution towards spreading Portuguese culture.

Érica Faleiro Rodrigues

Major Achievements:

Luís Cláudio Ribeiro is professor of Sound Studies and head of Communication Sciences Department at Lusófona University, in Lisbon. PhD in Communication Sciences, develops research activity in the field of media epistemology and sound. His recent publications focus on the medium, identification and characterization of changes by the use of sound mediators in contemporary society: O Mundo é uma Paisagem Devastada pela Harmonia (Lisboa: Vega, 2011) e O Som Moderno – Novas formas de criação e escuta (Lisboa: Edições Lusófonas, 2011).). He is the main investigator of the project Lisbon SoundMap, supported by the Portuguese Government (FCT): https://www.lisbonsoundmap.org and https://lisbonsoundmap.wordpress.com/. In addition to the academic activity, he is also a poet and novelist. The most recent books are Sucede no entanto que o Outono veio (Lisboa: 2013) and Um Jardim Abandonado que Desbota (Lisboa:2014).

Gonçalo Galvão Teles graduated from the University of Lisbon with a Law Degree before traveling to the United States to complete the Master’s Program in Screenwriting at the prestigious University of Southern California (USC). Upon returning to Portugal, his first produced screenplay, the animated short “The Suspicion”, went on to win the Cartoon D’Or for Best European Animation of the year 2000. Since then, Gonçalo has developed a career as writer, director and producer of more than twenty films. He is a full professor at the film department at Universidade Lusófona.

Filipe Vale

Field of Teaching: Digital Animation
Major Achievements:

In 1992, he graduated from the Art University of Lisbon (ESBAL) with a degree in Plastic Arts – Painting and he studied drawing and puppets animation in Lazenec-Bretagne/ Rennes and in Filmógrafo/ Porto in 1993/4. He directed different animated short films since 1995. With the film “The Suspect” he won numerous prizes including the Cartoon D’Or 2000. In 2007 he found with two friends the animation production company Sardinha em Lata. In the last few years he directed the short animated film “Journey To Cape Verde” based in his personal illustrated journal, developed a TV series project for children named “Dodu the cardboard boy” and he recently finished is 26’ live action and animation film “Christmas wrapping paper” . He is currently working on “Nayola”, an animated feature film that for the first time in Portugal is funded by a national fund. Simultaneously, he illustrates children’s picture books and he teaches animation in Portugal and abroad. He has also teach at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias.

José Miguel Ribeiro

Major Achievements:

Finished his studies in architecture because of his passion for animation and moved to London, where he graduated from the Royal College of Art.
His first film “Tale of the Cat and the Moon” premiered in Cannes in 1996 and was awarded by 15 various international prizes.

Director of many animation films. He’s an Alumni in film studies of Universidade Lusófona. He’s one of the founders of Sardinha em Lata, a portuguese animation production company that has many animation works. He also directs and produces most of Sardinha em Lata works.

He’s Director and teacher of the Performative Arts degree.

Edmundo Cordeiro is Associate Professor and currently Professor of «Analysis of Cinematographic Discourse» and «Film Theory Issues». He holds a PhD in Communications Sciences/Film Theory, and did post-doctoral studies on the work of Canadian and Portuguese filmmakers.
Among others publications, he is the author of «Actos de Cinema», on the film aesthetics of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze.

Margarida Penetra Prieto

Major Achievements:

Conceição Costa holds a PhD in Communication Sciences – Media Studies, from FCSH-UNL (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), a Master in Multimedia Communication (Lusófona University) and a Master of Arts in Business Communication and Public Relations from the European University. Her main research interests are children and media, media literacy and interaction design. She is also a Certified Usability Analyst from Human Factors International (USA). Currently she is an Assistant Professor at Lusófona University and a Researcher at CICANT, in Lisbon, Portugal. As a lecturer she teaches Interaction Design at several bachelor degrees at ECATI, Marketing in Information Technologies (MSc in Computer Engineering) and Communication and Technology in the PhD in Communication Sciences. She is the Principal Investigator of GAMILearning, a research project about digital games for media and information literacy, funded by FCT (with Universidade de Aveiro, Austin-Texas University and SAPO-PT). Since 2010, she has been a member of the COST Action ISO906 WG1: “New Media Genres, Media Literacy, and Trust in the Media” and has been involved in several European publications about media literacy and media education.

Teacher in the Photography and Film degree at Universidade Lusófona. Rodrigo Peixoto (Lisbon, 1974) is a photographer since 1999, when he finished is photography course at Ar.Co. In that year he was awarded a scholarship by the FLAD (Luso-American Foundation for Development), which allowed him to study at SVA (School of Visual Arts) in New York City. In 2010 he finished his Master degree in Fine Arts at ESAD, IPL. He has been exhibiting his work since 1999 in several individual and group shows, and his photo works are present in some of the major portuguese public collections such has PLMJ, EDP and BES Art.

One of his biggest success so far was one of his works being featured in Photoburst at NASA (in Epod, a service by NASA’s Earth Science Division) as picture of the day. He also had a picture on the Portuguese National Geographic paper publication in the “your shot” section.

Major Achievements:

The animated short “The Fan and the Lamp” directed while he was a second year student in the Digital Animation Degree had numerous screenings at festivals and won many prizes, one of them was at the Animation film festival in Lisbon “Monstra”. The graduation film “Alda”, where he was one of the Directors, also had many screenings and awards, with special reference to Animation Sophia 2014, the Portuguese Oscars.

Founder of the Portuguese record label “Sons of the Rave”, Daniel was always a bright student and was one of the first Alumni in Sound Science and Technology. He is also audio content producer and owner/manager of Heavy Load Recordings.

Has been working mostly as a Cinematographer in short films, music video clips, documentaries and tv spots. He’s a member of AIP, the Portuguese Image Association.

Luís was one of the best editor monitors the Film degree ever had. He’s currently working for Discovery Communications making promotional videos. He recently won a World Gold Medal and a Silver Medal in New York Festivals Television & Film Awards.

Major Achievements:

His graduation film degree “O Tenente” and the transmedia film thesis in film studies master “Lápis Azul” have been awarded in many occasions. “Lápis Azul” was in Cinema Theaters for a few weeks which proves the quality of the project. Has been working in SIC, a private TV channel in Portugal.

Major Achievements:

Filipe has been successful since graduating from the Film Degree. One of his biggest success so far is the feature film “The Thorne of The Rose”, 2013. He also directed a few music clips and shorts..

Inês Santa

Major Achievements:

Inês has a Bachelor’s degree in Film Studies and Art History from Middlesex University and another one in Film, Video and Multimedia Communication from Universidade Lusófona. Inês worked as a Production Assistant in Costa do Castelo Filmes and Galeria Luís Serpa. She also reviewed film scripts at Stopline. She’s been working mainly as Pedagogical Coordinator in the Film & Media Arts Department at Universidade Lusófona for almost ten years and is one of the main reasons of the Department growth and success in the recent years.

Raquel Laranjo

Field of Studies: Art Department
Major Achievements:

While studying in the Film degree Raquel was always interested in the Art Department. In her graduation film “Romeo & Juliet – The Musical”, which she co-writed, she was the Art Director. Later that year the film was awarded at “Prémios Zon” as the best short film and as best project, winning a total prize of one hundred thousand euros.
Since that time she’s been working as Art Director, Make up Artist and Photographer. For the last 4 years she’s been mostly an art department assistant for tv advertising.
Most recently she was the make up artist of the feature film “Capitão Falcão”.
