Mission & Strategy
HFF München is conceptualized as a place of comprehensive education and professional training. Our aim is to advance the development of talented young people as artistic personalities, to encourage and support them on their path toward an individual style of cinematic expression.
HFF München upholds a tradition of comprehensive training in all aspects of movie-making – from creative design, film craft and technology, to media business and science – while placing equal emphasis on free space for esthetic experimentation, the innovation of film language, and a complex, content-focused discourse on cinematic storytelling as a reflection of social reality.
HFF München “learning by doing” is our central methodological approach, with all training focused particularly on the students’ own film production efforts. It is through this creative process, supported and guided, that students acquire an understanding of the special principles of creative work.
HFF München strives to advance – in the truest sense of the word avant-garde – both current cinematic discourse and formal standards. The university accordingly aims to not just serve the current needs of the movie and television market, but to enrich it with artistic personalities, so as to provide a major impetus to filmmaking in Germany.

Michael Gutmann
The author and director born in Frankfurt am Main in 1956, worked as an assistant director and series writer after completing his studies at the HFF. Munich-based producer Georg Althammer helped him with his first TV directing opportunity on the series “Das Nest,” later on the crime series “Ein Fall für zwei” (A Case for Two). Gutmann went on to direct more crime formats for various production companies and broadcasters. In 1995, he created the dark comedy “ROHE OSTERN,” written by Mathias Dinter, produced by HFF graduates Mischa Hofmann and Philip Voges.
When Hans-Christian Schmid needed assistance in developing the material for his cinematic debut “NACH FÜNF IM URWALD” (After Five in the Jungle) in 1995, producer Jakob Claussen had the idea to bring Schmid and Gutmann together. This led to a collaboration that lasted for many years. Together, they developed the screenplay for the TV movie “NUR FÜR EINE NACHT” (Just for One Night, 1996), which Gutmann directed. Gutmann was Schmid’s co-author in four directorial projects:
- “23 – Nichts ist wie es scheint” (23 – Nothing is as It Seems, 1997),
- “CRAZY” (1999),
- “LICHTER” (2002),
- “WIR SIND DANN WOHL DIE ANGEHÖRIGEN” (2021).
Gutmann also directed the jointly developed screenplay for the film “HERZ ÜBER KOPF” (Heart Over Head, 2001).
Gutmann gained significant attention with his Tatort episode “DER OIDE DEPP” (The Old Fool, 2007), partly due to the strong script by Alexander Adolph and the cinematography by HFF graduate Kay Gauditz. The producer was Bernd Burgemeister.
Based on the life memories of Marcel Reich-Ranicki, Gutmann wrote the TV movie “MEIN LEBEN” (MY LIFE) in 2009. Directed by Dror Zahavi, produced by Katharina Trebitsch.
In 2010, Gutmann directed the TV movie “DIE LETZTEN 30 JAHRE” (THE LAST 30 YEARS), written by Ruth Toma, produced by Rima Schmidt for Mischa Hofmann’s Odeon Film.
The following year, Gutmann directed the Franconian crime drama “BAMBERGER REITER” (Bamberg Rider), written by Peter Probst, produced by Sven Burgemeister. He collaborated again with Burgemeister on his most recent directorial work “DIE HÖLLE BIN ICH” (I Am Hell, 2014), written by Alexander Adolph and Eva Wehrum. The film was part of the then-new crime series “München Mord” (Munich Murder).
In 2018, Gutmann worked as a co-author for the novel adaptation “ALS HITLER DAS ROSA KANINCHEN STAHL” (WHEN HITLER STOLE PINK RABBIT), directed by Caroline Link, produced by Jochen Laube at Sommerhaus Filmproduktion. In the same year, Gutmann collaborated with director/editor Max Fey on his cinematic debut “ZWISCHEN UNS” (BETWEEN US, 2021).
The cinematic screenplay “WIR SIND DANN WOHL DIE ANGEHÖRIGEN” (I Guess We Are the Relatives) was adapted into a film by Hans-Christian Schmid in 2021. The source material is the book of the same name by Johann Scheerer, published by Piper Verlag.
Since 2005, Gutmann has been teaching at the HFF München and has been the managing director of the newly established screenplay department since 2009. He contributes to the development of numerous films.

Prof. Dr. Sylvia Rothe
Dr Sylvia Rothe – mathematician, software developer, filmmaker, AI professor
Dr Sylvia Rothe studied mathematics at the Humboldt University in Berlin, where she then worked as a research assistant. She then worked as a software developer and in business development for Siemens and Fujitsu-Siemens, among others, and has already realized several part-time film projects. She also attended courses in film design and then turned this passion into a career in 2011. In the same year she took part in the training initiative European Social Documentary for documentary filmmakers, which focuses on the possibilities of innovative storytelling methods. While working for a Munich film production company, Dr. Sylvia Rothe is increasingly dealing with the topic of inclusive media and thus came into contact with virtual reality. She realized various VR film projects and started her dissertation on this topic in 2017. As a doctoral student, she also supervised numerous student projects on virtual and augmented reality as well as AI and led corresponding internships. Her scientific work has been presented at various conferences (Best Paper Award TVX 2019) and published in scientific journals. In 2020 she completed her PhD in Cinematic Virtual Reality.
For teaching, Dr. Sylvia Rothe, to convey AI in a very practical way and, among other things, to show its use in film production. As examples, she sees searching through large amounts of film data, training camera drones and generating special film sequences using deepfake technologies. In the area of research, Rothe would like to use her first months at the HFF Munich primarily to enter into discourse with the various departments and colleagues and to work out together where AI can support processes in media production. From this she will then derive the limitation of her research direction. Of particular interest for the film sector, Dr. Sylvia Rothe multimodal approaches: “A lot of previous research has focused exclusively on a special medium such as text, audio or images.

- Director
Maren Ade was born in Karlsruhe on 12 December 1976 to a couple of teachers. She studied cinema at Munich’s Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film. As of 2001 she co-founded, together with Janine Jackowski, a fellow graduate from HFF, the “Komplizen” film company. It is through Komplizen that Maren would later co-produce, among others, “Arabian Nights”, Miguel Gomes’ masterpiece. After two shorts in 2000 and 2001 made under the auspices of her film school, she co-produced, wrote and and directed Der Wald vor lauter Bäumen (2003), her first feature. A grueling drama about the difficult beginnings of a new teacher, the movie impressed both audiences and critics. Incidentally, it is of interest to specify that its school scenes were entirely shot within the walls of the educational institution where her mother was teaching at the time. This promising effort was followed six years later by Alle Anderen (2009), which although taking place in a totally different setting (the Sardinian seaside in the glory of Summer) also concerns characters unsure of themselves. A taut drama as well, it revolves around two holiday making newly married couples and describes in a Roman Polanski-like manner the wicked relationships they share. But her greatest success came in 2015 and 2016 with Toni Erdmann (2016), an offbeat comedy with a philosophical approach, which enthused the festival-goers at Cannes, allegedly making them “roar with laughter”, and later making unexpected profit in art houses throughout the world. And it is true that a father playing dirty tricks on his daughter (meant to make her realize she is wasting her life) is no ordinary entertainment. As a matter of fact, after only three full-length movies to her credit, Maren Ade has become a name that counts in today’s German cinema.
